Super Tuscan: red wines from Tuscany produced by international grape varieties

Super Tuscan: red wines from Tuscany produced by international grape varieties

The Super Tuscan produced by non-native vines

Super Tuscan is the denomination designed to identify special Tuscan red wines not included in the production disciplinary of their area. Namely, a category that contains red wines produced in Tuscany from international grape varieties, such as Cabernet and Merlot.

The history of the Super Tuscans can be traced back to the early 80s and is linked to the need of some wine producers to leave the strict regulations of Chianti production. The aim was to create a new concept of Tuscan red wines, in contrast with the most famous denomination of that territory, between the provinces of Florence and Siena.

Sassicaia and Tignanello, the precursory wines of the Super Tuscan category

The first wine producer to look beyond Chianti was Marquis Incisa della Rocchetta, the inventor of Sassicaia. This red wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, two varieties of non-indigenous grapes for the Tuscan territory but that in Bolgheri find fertile ground for their cultivation.
Sassicaia, therefore, can be considered the real precursory wine of the Super Tuscans.

The first red wine to be included in the category is Tignanello by Marquis Piero Antinori. This wine is obtained from Sangiovese grapes with a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, two non-traditional varieties for Tuscany.

The IGT denomination for Super Tuscan wines

The denomination of Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT) was created in 1992. Immediately, many wine producers of Super Tuscans joined it. Within a few years, these full-bodied soul red wines began to be appreciated internationally.

Speaking of Super Tuscans, we usually refer to full-bodied and structured red wines, produced with Bordeaux grapes, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. The watchword for Super Tuscan producers is to go beyond the concept of tradition by presenting new mixes of international blends, in the name of wine experimentation.

Principe Corsini produces two Super Tuscan wines at Tenuta Marsiliana

Tenuta Marsiliana, with its 20 hectares of vineyards in the heart of the Maremma area, is the result of Duccio Corsini and his sister Sabina’s work. Since the late 90s, their goal has been to enhance the uniqueness of the local terroir, through the production of elegant and balanced wines.

After wide ampelographic experimentation, they have chosen to plant non-indigenous vines, which now have become traditional for the Tuscan Coast, like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. The management of the vineyard, certified organic since 2015, is conducted in total respect for nature and seasonality.

Birillo IGT Costa Toscana, the mini Super Tuscan

Birillo and Marsiliana are the two Super Tuscan wines of Principe Corsini, produced at Tenuta Marsiliana in Manciano, in the province of Grosseto: both represent two peculiar shades of the Maremma terroir.

Birillo belongs to the Super Tuscan denomination for the grape varieties that compose it: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It is an enjoyable red table wine that can be defined as a “mini Super Tuscan” for its characteristics of power, depth, color, aging, and aromas which make it similar to the great Super Tuscans, yet deliberately simpler and softer.

Marsiliana IGT Costa Toscana, the Grand vin of Principe Corsini

Marsiliana is the “grand vin of our property in Maremma, from which it takes its name. It is the result of the selection of the best grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot grown in our vineyards in Manciano.

Soft and intense, Marsiliana is a wine that accomplishes at the highest level the encounter between the international style of Bordeaux grapes and the warm and deep power of the Tuscan coast. For this reason, it is included in the category of Super Tuscan.
