Vermentino IGT Toscana: grape's history and characteristics of the 2023 vintage by Principe Corsini

Vermentino IGT Toscana: grape's history and characteristics of the 2023 vintage by Principe Corsini

The Origins of Vermentino

Vermentino is a white grape variety typically grown in Liguria, Tuscany, and Sardinia, where the proximity of the sea gives it truly unique characteristics.

The hypotheses on the origins of Vermentino are different. Among the most accredited, there is that the vine originated in Spain and then spread in France – especially in Corsica – until reaching the Italian regions of Liguria, Sardinia and Tuscany. A triangle of lands bordered by the Ligurian, Tyrrhenian, and Sardinian seas, where the vine has found a perfect microclimate.

The Vermentino of Tuscany grown on the sea

In Tuscany, the cultivation of Vermentino is prevalent in the territories facing the Tyrrhenian coast, from the north of Massa Carrara province to the south of Grosseto. The Maremma, in particular, is the protagonist of a production where the vine has taken on varietal characteristics very different from the Vermentino cultivated in Liguria or Sardinia.

It is in the immediate hinterland that the Vermentino di Toscana shows its best, as in the case of the territory of the Tuscan Maremma. Here the production counts several Vermentino labels designated with the typical geographical indication.

Brackish wind and long periods of drought, hilly and dry soils, prolonged exposure to the sun. Vermentino Principe Corsini is born in Tenuta Marsiliana in the territories of the Tuscan Maremma between Manciano and Capalbio, municipalities in the south of the province of Grosseto.

Here the company cultivates about 20 hectares of land dedicated to the cultivation of Vermentino and non-autochthonous vines but, now, traditional for years for the Tuscan Coast: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

The 2023 characteristics of Vermentino produced in Marsiliana

The white wine of Principe Corsini, made from 100% Vermentino grapes, is certified organic. On the clives of Maremma, the proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea is breathed in the air and the sea breeze that blows in every corner, but also and especially in the glasses of Vermentino Principe Corsini. The 2023 vintage has donated a straw yellow wine, which releases aromas of citrus, sage, elderflower, plant buds and algae. The result is a fresh, savory and mineral white that evokes the sea.

The harvest involves the manual harvesting of whole grapes, placed in small boxes to avoid the compression of the berries. The 16-hour film maceration at 6°C takes place in inert tanks. The separation from the skins and the subsequent fermentation continue for 16 days at 12 o C. After a period of soaking in steel, the wine is promptly bottled and made available.
