Contact usViva is the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security’s program, which was born in 2011 as a pilot project to measure the sustainability performance of Italian wine.
Today, Viva promotes the sustainability of the Italian wine sector and aims to create a production model that respects the environment and enhances the territory, to protect the quality of Italian wines and offer opportunities on the international market. Viva is the public standard for measuring and improving the sustainability performance of wine growing in Italy. The company Principe Corsini joined the program in 2022.
The main objectives of the Viva program are two. The first is to define the current sustainability profile of the Italian wine sector. The second is the formulation of guidelines for sustainable wine production, in compliance with the indications of the European Union and the OIV.
The Viva project includes an integrated approach for sustainability in one of the most important agro-food sectors in the country. It also stipulates that the evaluation of a wine’s performance should be based on four specific indicators. Let’s find out what the evaluation criteria are.
To measure the sustainability performance of Italian wine, the Viva certification promoted by the Ministry is based on four indicators: Air, Water, Vineyard, and Territory.
That is the natural elements at the base of grape cultivation, whose interweaving gives rise to a wine production that in Italy has no equal in the world, when compared to the varieties and quality of grapes and wine produced.
The AIR indicator expresses the total greenhouse gas emissions generated, directly or indirectly, by the activities carried out by the company analysed. This also gives the producer a chance to understand how to take action to reduce their own company’s impact on the climate.
The WATER indicator expresses the potential environmental impacts resulting from the use of fresh water. Takes into account water directly consumed and polluted by the activities carried out by the holding, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, during a calendar year.
As mentioned, the other two sustainability indicators are Vineyard and Territory.
The first is to assess agricultural management practices, such as the use of agrochemicals and their consequences on water, air and soil, or soil management including fertilization, organic matter management, erosion and compaction.
The Territory indicator assesses the impact of business activities on the land, both as an environment (biodiversity, conservation and enhancement of the landscape) and as a human community, on which social and economic consequences for workers are assessed, local community, producers and consumers. The indicator shows whether the holding meets the socio-economic requirements defined by the Viva programme.
As mentioned, the company Principe Corsini has joined the program promoted by the Ministry, obtaining certification and adhering to the Organization Label Disciplinary.
But how can you check the level of sustainability of the company? It’s very simple. Just use your smartphone or tablet and scan the QR code next to it. Through the QR you can see the results of Principe Corsini for each of the 4 indicators: air, water, vineyard, and territory. The detail of each indicator contains a short description that allows for an understanding of the sustainability aspects expressed by the indicator itself.
