San Casciano Classico, 25 producers of Chianti Classico wine and oil

The association tells about Chianti Classico territory

San Casciano Classico is an association founded in 2018 to bring together wine and oil producers from the municipality of San Casciano in Val di Pesa, in the wine-growing area of Chianti Classico.

The association’s aim is to communicate and enhance the peculiarities of the territory and its products, through the direct story of companies in the area. San Casciano Classico today has 25 member companies, including Principe Corsini – Villa Le Corti.

Il terroir di San Casciano Classico

San Casciano in Val di Pesa terroir belongs to the production area of DOCG Chianti Classico wine, which is the northern area of the denomination. The area is hilly, with vineyards and olive groves located between 250 and 350 meters above sea level.

The soils are mainly clay with limestone and sand, while the soil is rich in the skeleton with the presence of round pebbles of river origin and galestro and alberese stones.
The cool climate guarantees a good temperature range between day and night, with cold but not frigid winters, and hot but not torrid summers.

The municipalities of Chianti Classico

Chianti Classico area, whose boundaries were delimited for the first time by the Gran Ducale of Cosimo III de’ Medici edict in 1716, has an extension of about 70,000 hectares between the provinces of Florence and Siena.

Today, there are eight municipalities in the Chianti Classico area: San Casciano in Val di Pesa, Greve in Chianti and Barberino Tavarnelle in the Florentine area, Radda in Chianti, Castellina in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti, Castelnuovo Berardenga and Poggibonsi in the Sienese area.

Olive and oil tradition in San Casciano in Val di Pesa

In addition to wine, the history of San Casciano has always been linked to the production of extra virgin olive oil. Until 1985, it held the record of the largest number of oil mills operating in Tuscany. In the territory, the oldest documented oil production is at Villa Le Corti.

In 1363, in fact, the Corsini family bought “three farms with vineyards and olive trees, an oil mill and a house of lords” in San Casciano. The choice was determined not only by the proximity to Florence, but also by the quality of the land suitable for agriculture and, in particular, the presence of an oil mill for the production of oil.
