Marsiliana: exhibition on Tommaso Corsini archaeologist

The Principe Corsini winery in Tuscany, owned by the Corsini family, opens its doors to wine tourists to exhibit an important archaeological project conducted by the University of Siena in collaboration with the Superintendence of Archaeology in Tuscany.

From July 23, 2016 to January 31, 2017, the Tenuta Marsiliana is hosting an exhibit of high caliber in honor of its founder. “Tommaso Corsini, archaeologist in Maremma” is part of the important archaeological exhibit “Marsiliana d’Albegna. From the Etruscans to Tommaso Corsini”.

The exhibition is held at four prestigious locations: the Museum of Archaeology and Art of Maremma in Grosseto, the Museum of Prehistory and Protohistory of the Fiora Valley in Manciano, the Oil Mill of Dispensa in Marsiliana d’Albegna, and the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Vines in Scansano.

The project was started as a way to present the important results of over a dozen years of research at the important Etruscan center in Marsiliana d’Albegna to the public. It is conducted by the Department of Historical Sciences and Cultural Heritage of the University of Siena with the collaboration of the Superintendence of Archaeology in Tuscany.

The Oil Mill of Dispensa in Marsiliana d’Albegna displays the part dedicated to the multitalented historical figure of Tommaso Corsini, an outstanding person in the history of post-Unified Italy as well as an innovator of the agricultural estate. Tommaso Corsini was an archaeologist guided by extraordinary intuition and passion.

He is owed the fundamental discoveries in the zone of Marsiliana d’Albegna, such as the Etruscan necropolis of Banditella with over one hundred different forms of tombs, and the first excavations of the necropolis Piani di Perazzeta and that of Macchiabuia.

Their work recovered a large number of documents and a vast repertoire of photographs about the activities of Tommaso Corsini, the history of Tenuta Marsiliana, and of Maremma in general. Special attention is given to the relationship between the Corsini prince and several members of the powerful Macchiaioli, including Giovanni Fattori, who were guests at the estate several times.

In addition, there is an itinerary at the Dispensa of Marsiliana, with particular reference given to the numerous times stone from an ancient Roman villa, Banditella, was reused in the gardens and structures of the complex, as well as at the House of Amphorae at Poggio Alto.
