Fico: organic and vegan wine from an idea of Filippo Corsini

A wine that respect nature in Villa Le Corti

The making of wine is an absolute vocation for those who have, always, lived and breathed its presence. However, the desire to transform, to innovate the philosophy of winemaking with a new more emphatically personal vision is something more: this is a gift.

Fico is therefore much more than simply a wine, it is the portrait of its noble creator Filippo Corsini, the first son of Clotilde and Duccio Corsini, who passed away on the 31st of October 2016 at the age of 21, in London, where he was carrying out his studies. Fico is a gift to the future.

The idea to create this wine in close and harmonious respect to the environment matured during the multi-faceted professional experiences that Filippo lived throughout a year spent travelling the world.

First in Buenos Aires, at the Distilleria Fratelli Branca, then in Patagonia at the winery of his cousin Piero Incisa della Rochetta, Bodega Chacra, followed by New York and the Restaurant Enoteca Babbo of Mario Batali. Filippo shared with great enthusiasm the idea with his father Duccio, at the head of the family winery Principe Corsini since 1992, who strongly encouraged it.

Returning home to Villa Le Corti, he approached his father with his newfound experience and knowledge and proposed his project. The goal: to create a wine which was the symbol of a new direction, to produce a wine which followed a different set of criteria, capable of complying with the rhythms and organic cycles of the vines and of the natural environment which, in itself, furnishes all that is necessary for the creation of a great wine.

For the young Filippo Corsini, the project did not only represent a contemporary interpretation of tradition as learned through the experiences gained but further, an authentic philosophy of life.

Organic and vegan sangiovese of 2015

2015 marked the first harvest of Fico, a 100% Sangiovese wine which takes its name from the fig tree on the boundary of the Gugliaie vineyard, one of the property’s finest piece of land. From these carefully chosen eight rows, taking a holistic bio-dynamic approach, Filippo put in to practice and subsequently bottled what is, in effect, an interpretation of his own personal vision of winemaking.

This first harvest produced 280 numbered and organically certificated bottles, cementing this philosophy for the future of Principe Corsini winery, partner in the project.

Fico gives a voice to the hills and the vines from which it comes and to the identity and beliefs of he who created it, his love for the natural world and his intuition regarding what could be achieved. From the name, inspired by the fig tree that stands beside the rows of vines, to the care and attention given to the practices of bio-dynamics.

From the materials used for the bottling and packaging, light-weight glass with little environmental impact, to the label, a watercolour painted by his aunt Fiona Corsini and imprinted on re-cycled paper with the image of the fruit and leaves of the fig tree.

“Leave a mark – Is the unspoken duty not expressed but expected in our family: the making of wine is one of the means by which we commit ourselves and it is something that we love to do. Filippo, however, did much more. With his youth, his curiosity and his enthusiasm he lit the way on a road already well walked, giving life to something new, a project that we will carry ahead because it is the right direction to follow.

For years our winery has been organic, but Filippo’s vision represents an even bigger step ahead. His achievement is a precious inheritance: it is the winemaking philosophy for our future. Lastly, in order to pay tribute, to honour him and the legacy he left us, we as a family want to commit ourselves to the support of the young who, like Filippo, through their own intuition know how to bring new blood to the world of agriculture, art and beauty and to life itself.”
